As we all probably know, Google tends to make acquisitions all the time. One of their recent acquisitions was a company called “GrandCentral.” The technology from this company became what is now known as Google Voice.
The idea is simple – all your phones (cell phone, business line, home phone) aggregated under a single telephone number. When someone dials your number it rings all of your phones (or some of them if you setup schedules) at the same time and you can answer on any one of them. You also get some other neat features:
- Call Screening (know who is calling you)
- Listen In on the call before answering it
- Block particular callers
- Receive, save, and send SMS (text) messages
- Phone Routing – decide which phones to ring based on who calls
- Listen to Voicemail (via phone or online), and have those voicemails transcribed to text
- Receive voicemails to email or SMS
- Switch Phones during a call
- Conference calling
- Clients for iPhone and Blackberry
This is definitely a free tool with a lot of potential uses. If you haven’t already, make sure you sign up for a chance to try this product out. Plus, for a limited time they are allowing you to show off your Google Number by getting free business/calling cards! If you’re still not sure how useful this would be, surf through the Getting Started Guide and the help documentation on Using Google Voice.
