While this post may not be completely relevant to our blog theme, I figured most of us are among the millions of iPod owners out in the world. If you’re like me, you enjoy listening to your music on a regular basis. Sometimes you want a way to bask in the beauty of the multiple Gigabytes of Country/Rock/Rap/Techno/etc you’ve amassed in your iTunes library without using headphones (perhaps you want to share the joy with a friend). Enter the portable iPod speaker system.
While there’s any number of ways bring your tunes to life (stereo docks, media extenders, etc), portable speaker systems seem to be a swiss-army-knife type of gadget. I own the Altec Lansing IM600 portable iPod speaker system and use it quite frequently! It sounds great, has great battery life, and is small enough to take everywhere! I’ve used it for BBQ’s, picnics, small gatherings (as background/mood music), business trips, vacations, and even a drunken St. Patrick’s Day trolley tour around Chicago! Here are some of the benefits/features to explore when deciding which model is your best fit:
- Battery Power – Use the unit outdoors or away from AC Power
- iPod Charging – Charges your iPod when docked into the unit
- USB Connection – Charge your iPod and/or the unit’s battery, plug into your computer and manage the songs on your ipod
- AM/FM – In case you decide you hate your playlist or want to listen to local sports games or news
- Aux Inputs – Play music from your friend’s *not-as-cool* (joking!) Zune, Sansa, Zen, or other device
- Subwoofer Output – In case you want your music ridiculously loud
- Alarms – Great for travel, although you may or may not want the snooze button
- Remote – I love being lazy and changing the song from across the room
- Form Factor – some units collapse to a relatively small or flat package, which is great if you’re packing the unit for travel
