Netbooks: Your portable computer, but smaller!

If you’re not familiar with the concept of a Netbook, you can expect to be hearing them mentioned much more in the year to come.  A Netbook is a small version of a laptop computer, meant primarily for web browsing, e-mailing, and use of online/web-based applications (Google Apps, Zoho, etc).  They are generally less powerful than their full-blown laptop counterparts, but are significantly cheaper and more portable.

I’ve been seeing a large number of articles written on the role Netbooks will play in the near future.  Most of these articles correlate the rise in Netbook adoption to the following:

  1. A cheap price tag in a stressed economy where consumers spend less on technology
  2. A push towards cloud computing by software manufacturers (Microsoft, Google, etc.)
  3. Increasing availability of an Internet connection (via Wi-fi or Cellular broadband)

NetbookI admit that I’ve started keeping an eye on the technology and may look to buy one soon.  Plus, with an update to Windows Home Server, you can easily manage a Windows Home Server from your Netbook and use the server to augment the storage space available on your Netbook.  I definitely like the fact that Netbooks are way small and easily portable. Plus, their small size allows them to get ridiculously long battery life (typically greater than 5 hours) without a hefty battery pack!

If you’re thinking about getting one, I have found a few nice review sites to use:
