How to Pick a Secure Password

Lock image by AMagill (Flickr)With all the recent stories about phishing attacks on email addresses, I thought it worthwhile to pass along an article on the Gmail Blog:  Choosing a Smart Password.  If you think about it, many of us have numerous websites that require a login (Online Banking, Social Networking, Media Sharing, etc).  It can be tough to keep all those logins straight.  Much of this may seem like common sense, but the article may give you a few new ideas to help you create passwords that will keep you protected from people trying to hack your various accounts.

One thing to note:  If you’re like me and have a difficult time remembering all your passwords, I would recommend two open-source Password Management tools:  KeePass and Password Safe.  Both programs allows you to easily generate “secure” passwords, organize them in a single place, and automatically encrypt your list of login data so it remains secure.  Best of all, they are FREE!  One item to note:  If you use a combo of Mac OSX and Windows, you may want to opt for KeePass as the file formats are the same regardless of the OS.
