As you know, I’m a huge fan of the “Media Center” computer and using it to basically eliminate the need for cable. I wrote about the benefits back in my post Media Centers: A supplement or alternate to TV! However, as I was browsing through my RSS feeds yesterday, I saw a great article at Wealth…Uncomplicated: Getting the Most Out of Your Electronics. In the article, the author describes his media center setup in detail and the associated cost savings. If you were looking for a “blueprint” of sorts, this article may be just what you need.
In a side note, rumors are floating around the web that Apple is courting many of the TV networks in the hopes of creating a “subscription-based” model for delivering TV programs via the iTunes store and AppleTV device. Personally, I’m happy to see that Apple is potentially looking for ways to make the AppleTV useful. To date, I’ve not been able to convince myself that the AppleTV was worth the pricetag, since I could basically do the same thing with devices I already owned. However, the ability to “subscribe” to ONLY the channels I want would be quite tempting. Actually, it would be extremely tempting. I’ve always been a little upset that I had to pay $50-$60 for expanded or digital cable so that I could get the few channels I like to watch (FX, Comedy Central, etc). Mashable has an article with more details if you’re interested.
