If you haven’t been given an invite to sign up for Google Voice, you may now be able to jump the line and get in on the action! Google just announced Google Voice invites for students! If you currently have an email address ending in .edu, you can head on over to their sign-up page and get your invite for a shiny new Google Voice number within 24 hours. Remember, this will work for all you adults who still have an active .edu account (either from undergrad or graduate school).
In case you’re wondering why this is a great opportunity, here’s why you need your own FREE Google Voice number:
- Phone “Proxy” – One phone number rings all the phones you configure (with the ability to set schedules for each phone). I currently have my Google number ring my office phone during the day, and my apartment phone during the evening. My blackberry is not on a schedule, so it rings no matter what.
- Voicemail transcription to email - While it doesn’t get the voicemail 100% correct, I can generally get an idea of what the message is and determine whether or not I need to take immediate action on the Voicemail.
- Call Screening & Presentation – This is a great way to have minimize interruption by telemarketers. I’ve currently configured call screening ONLY for people who are not in my list of contacts.
- Switching Phones during a call – Just get home and your cell phone battery is dying? No problem. Switch phones without the other person even knowing.
- SMS Forwarding – Forward SMS texts to your email, and to each SMS-capable phone tied to your Google Voice number.
And that’s just the beginning. Seriously, sign up and check it out. It’s FREE.
Contact Me if you have additional questions, or want to know more about using it on a Blackberry (as I currently do)!
