Jim,

Chances are you're suffering from many of the same issues I described in my article - interference, signal strength, etc. I've used Wi-Fi extenders before, but have found that mixing manufacturers (extender vs. router, etc) can cause lots of problems. In your case, and to hopefully make this as painless as possible, I would suggest you purchase the Netgear WN300RP Wi-Fi Extender. It has "Push 'n Connect" like your Netgear DGN1000 router, which should make setup easier. Remember to place the extender about half-way to your "dead zone", as you want a decent Wi-Fi signal reaching the extender in order for it to reliably extend the Wireless network.

Hope that helps!

I ran into a situation where I could not use my wireless router to connect to my laptop and running a cable to that part of the house was not cost effective. After reading Rob's article on using powerline adapters, I went to Staples and bought the Netgear Powerline AV500 for $120.

I brought it home and it literally took only a few minutes to plug it into my DSL modem and then the AC outlet where the laptop was at and I was on the web with a very fast connection.

If you have a part of the house where your wireless does not work right or at all, these adapters are perfect for that situation.

Rob - thanks for a great article!

I use a netgear DGN 1000 router,it is connected to my computer by an ethnernet cable, and has an telephone cable.
I have recently bought a IPAD 2 but my reception is very poor and only get sporadic connection. When I go round to my daughters house the connection is perfect,so why do I have a problem//

I am a technical dumbo ,so hope you can help,I have read of repeaters and range extenders, would they help.

Steve,

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment! I'm surprised that SugarSync is not working for you. I personally sync a Quicken file (version 2010, over 32MB in size) daily without issue. A few things you may want to check out and validate:

Make sure you are syncing the correct file. You may be syncing a file in the wrong folder, and/or you may be syncing the wrong type of file. According to Intuit Support, there are four file extensions you can back up (including the main file type - QDF).

Ensure you are closing the file when you are done. Sugarsync won't sync your Quicken file until you close the Quicken program (or at least you close your use of the Quicken file by opening a different Quicken file).

Make sure you are allowing ample time for the sync to occur before opening the file on another machine. If you edit the file on two separate machines, SugarSync will notice a conflict and tag the files with the respective computer names. Sugar Sync opts to save BOTH files rather than overwriting one of the concurrently modified files.

Make sure that once you close your Quicken program, you allow enough time for the computer to be on so that it can sync. If you put your computer in "Hibernate" or "Standby" mode, the sync will not occur.

Hope that helps!

Joe,

Thanks for commenting! I used the Netgear model #XAVB1004 powerline networking kit. If you prefer not to order it on Amazon (linked above), you can find it at Best Buy - http://bit.ly/x4IruJ). Amazon has the lowest price at the moment.

Let me know if you have additional questions!

I have followed all of the steps you suggest to sync my Quicken data files between two computers, but so far without success. I can sync other files, but not Quicken files. I am using a much older version of Quicken (2002), and my Quicken data file is quite large (>8MB) but it doesn't seem that this should make a difference. For what it is worth, SugarSync help says that you shouldn't try to sync certain types of files between 2 or more computers, including Quicken files. Do you have any suggestions?

Pero,

I would recommend contacting Quicken Support. Most of the older versions had converters to migrate through each version. You may be able to have the Quicken Support folks get you some older copies of Quicken so that you can migrate your data forward. *If* they are even willing to help, I would bet you are in for a long, painful process. You may be better off printing out some reports from your old quicken data, and just starting a new file in Quicken 2010.

I have recently had a few problems finding the ideal software to help me manage my business. However, I was recently contacted by a friend who suggested to me to try the Workforce Track website. After I started browsing with the Free Trial tool, within the same day I felt that I had mastered how to use this software. I recommend Workforce Track as the most easy-to-use, cost-effecient software I have tried so far.

Ted,

Unfortunately, I don't know of any programs to perform the conversion. Does your program have a print function? Perhaps you could print your historical data to PDF and save it in google docs or sugar sync. I would suggest that if you can't convert, you wait until the end of a tax year and then start with a new tool. What were your dbase programs tracking- personal or business data?

Joe,

Mint.com is pretty good, and is the tool I use for my overall financial picture. There are some other tools (such as yodlee), but I found them less intuitive and easy as mint. If I find something online that works as good or better than mint, I'll be sure to post it!
